Is it worth doing it rather that leveling yourself?
Like how did you do it? Because I though you got penalized for grouping

Tanking DM was a fucking blast. I out damaged him by over 60k damage, and everything sticks to you like glue.

Pally prot is pointless at low levels since there's barely anything you need to tank and it's so gear reliant for it to work well.

Then again so is speccing holy pre 70 since again you just can't gear it.

Dirty though it makes me feel, ret is the sensible option.

I thought exactly the same, until I tried it. Its awesome and a lot faster than I expected. It surprised me and surprised a few other people, including one who insisted they didnt need a tank in DM. Until I began tanking entire sections of mobs while everyone AOE'd.

I can AOE quests very easily.

My only gripe is as you said its so gear reliant. I tend to run out of mana alot when I'm solo. Hence me changing to herb/alchy to make my own mana pots.

There's also the problem of a general lack of decent AOE spots, you have a similar problem with Mage whereby for certain level periods you can AOE like a madman for crazy exp, but then you're stuck questing for a bunch of levels again.

I stayed ret until about 65 when Stoneh finally agreed it was sensible for me to go holy for some random instance we were trying to get done.

Much as I love holy and healing, Ret was much better as far as downtime goes. You can get more xp/hour if you don't have to sit and drink every couple of mobs.

Low level ret'adining with the corpsemaker was crazy. Nothing i couldnt take on really.
Always loved the pallies ability to solo single elites, my mage could never do that (a frost mage probably could do alot of it i guess).

Warlocks are the best for that sort of thing, really. Although I was really annoyed when I found out they made the mobs in BE nub zone fear immune. :<

Retadin for levelling, Holy for lvl 60 (havent played at over lvl 60 so can't say) is the best way to do things.

One could go prot, and tank the smaller instances like Strat, Scholo, BFD. But as a pala I couldn't tank anything harder than that. Holy is the way to go at higher level, very easy to get into groups. Also very hard to die in pvp as a holy pala.

I levelled mine in Ret up to level 65ish - then switched to Prot.

I always get invites to tank, since people are starting to realise now that we can tank (even though our itemisation is shit).

Im currently tanking Heroics & Kara on a regular basis.

So, no you dont NEED to be holy, its whatever you want to play - Holy is great, but you play as Prot at 70 just as easy.

PS. Its fun to watch Rogues bash themselves to death on you.
