Boot it up, enter you nickname information then make sure you connect to one of the Quakenet servers, doesn't really make much difference which one it is, whichever is based closest to you is always a safe bet, then connect!

Once connected type /join #lern2play.

TBH, i dont ever use IRC, dont plan too either.
