Becky Hogge, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said the letters were a disproportionate response from the music industry.
"We need to protect users from punitive measures," she said.
She said the music industry had to be in a position of offering a viable alternative before it clamped down on the activities of some users.
Ding ding, we have a winner.

If the music industry hadn't been so obsessed with sticking to the old, terrible, moneygrabbing business model in the face of online distribution they'd have a lot less to worry about by now.

I would consider binning of Virgin if only there were a cable alternative available to me. I just don't want to go back to ADSL.

Not if it is bought - it does if it is pirated.
Figures for artist show that 10 years ago the UK number 1 record sold lets say 1 million copies, to get a number 1 single now, you only have to sell 50k lol.

The only way musicians can earn decent money now is to continually tour - hence the main reason why newer bands only release new records every 2 to 3 years instead of yearly in the old days. New material is only ever done from a musical "business" point of view in order to generate more bums on seats on tours with fresh content.

Yet it's the record labels who are throwing fits about filesharing, and the same record labels who give said artists ridiculously crappy deals and pitiful cash returns from said record sales.

And let's not forget that a sizeable chunk of reasoning for single sales dying is the simple fact that they're ridiculously priced, if the record labels would get off their arse and stop trying to gouge stupid amounts of money from single sales it would be a different story.

The cash returns are actually quite high these days on record sales, higher than they have ever been. Mainly that is because the record companies know that records dont sell as they get pirated by a majority.
Vicious circle to be honest.
Personally i dont download any music, if i want it, I buy it as Ive seen the impact on the music industry of pirated material. The difference now to when you used to "tape off the radio", is undoubtably the quality. In other words, you would tape the charts on a Sunday night, with your finger hovering over pause to cut off Simon Bates voice (lol), but you would still go out and buy the album or single itself as the copy was shit. Nowadays downloaded content is just as good as the original ITunes copy

Back in those days when you heard it on the radio you could actually go out and buy it, nowadays tracks are played endlessly on the radio for months before they are released, at which point you're sick of it and don't want to buy it.

I still haven't seen a study yet that shows that filesharing has had anywhere near the impact on the music/movie industry that the shock and awe figures released by the RIAA/MPAA would suggest. Most tend to show that the losses are significantly lower than they're made out to be.

Although admittedly you do have the firsthand experience which is worth taking into account.

Whats happening is the music 'industry' the faggoty middlemen are losing out. Even if its not to bad atm they can see the future of direct to market sales etc and they dont like it at all. After all it would make a few thousand people unemployed .

Most of the stuff I download I would never buy anyway. I have considered supporting the bands I like by buying their stuff, but I dont even own a CD player anymore, other than in my car and that never gets used due to the iPod dock.
