Simple and lazy option, download and install CCCP without installing their version of ffdshow, then install the ffdshow tryouts.

Basically gives you everything you could install manually, only with a bit less fannying about.

(CCCP ffdshow is optimized for playback only and can shit bricks later down the line if you want to encode)

CCCP comes with MPC and some other crappy thing, MPC is the win.

You may as well grab both of those too, just skip the MPC install from Quicktime alternative, and you'll never need to install Quicktime or Real ever again thank god.

Just use vlc to play stuff. Plays just about anything.

VLC is a pretty crappy player though.

Latest version of MPC HC has DXVA support, which means that most new graphic cards will help the playback support of h264/VC1/mpeg2 files.

Not that it matters much if you've got a core2duo which just only alone decodes the lovelyness of video sexyness
