Wireless trouble, help!

fuckshitbolloxwanksatinpieceofshitaaarrrgghhh!

Right, my Dell Vostro has always had this problem although tonight it's unfixable -.-

I'm trying to connect the laptop via wireless, the laptop see's Netgear but says it can't connect to it. It turns out that this is because the WPA code has disappeared from the security settings on the laptop. Like i said, this problem has existed from day1 (yes i know i shouldvbe called dell about it by now, ho hum), the solution to date has been to have the wpa stoed in a notepad file on the desktop, I then copy n paste it back into the security field, reboot and generally (not always but mostly) the lappy sees Netgear and actually manages to keep the WPA stored so it can connect... but not tonight. I've just spent the last 45 mins trying to connect and it aint havin it :-/

Anyone got any ideas whats up or how to fix it?

Have you checked to make sure your router still has the WPA key?

Quite a few routers have a wonderful habit of losing stored settings randomly, you might find that the laptop now has the correct key but the router doesn't.

Also is it connecting to the router fine and just not hitting t'internet, or not even connecting the the router at all?

Can't you use WEP instead of WPA? It's normally easier.

vostros are wonderful machines (i am being serious) weird tho we never get this problem at work weve been using the vostros since they came out.

They keep the keys stored all the time.... maybe its just a specific problem with yours ? Id contact dell about it if i were you.

Out of interest what vostro model did you get ? we get the cheap amd ones here although one member of staff has a more expensive 14 inch model with a c2d and other ridiculous hardware hehe.

Also have you power cycled your wireless access point yet. Youd be amazed how often this fixes conneciton issues.

router still has wpa stored fine, just checked.

it's in the securty settings on the laptop itself that it keeps defaulting to some smalldigit code. it doesnt always do it, infact it hasnt done it for a month or so now.

it wont connect to the router at all. it sees it, just wont connect to it.

No real need to guess, hell you can brute force your way into most wireless networks with software available for a sodding mobile phone. I even have software that'll do it for the DS. :x

no but there are whole load of programs out there that will crack it for you, much more so than WPA.

Granted it all depends on who you live near and depends just how secure you want to make your wireless.

In all honesty though if you just hide your network name and use any form of encryption whatsoever you'll be as safe as you need to be.

The chances of some nefarious Bond villian lurking in your garden trying to find a wireless network to launch his new masterplan for world domination is pretty fucking slim.
