That pisses me off, i've never ever been upgraded with Tiscali (about 3 dam years at 512kb) and now Sky (over 1 year at 2mb). If i went to virgin now, they'd offer me a 2mb for £40 a month i fucking bet you lol.

Edit: oh well, my internets maybe suck, but the beast i'll have behind it on wednesday sure as hell won't!! mwuhahah!

You do realise we're talking about files with bitrates upwards of 5000kbps here?

With Virgin, you get the speed on the tin, so a 5000kbps video file is cool...

Mine is still better, I prefer my 20mb which randomly gives me 30mb at times for unknown reasons. My internet is broke and it's awesome.

You get the advertised speed if you're within spitting distance of the exchange, further away = higher line attenuation, higher line attenuation = slower sync speed.

If you're talking cable then local contention becomes an even bigger issue.

Some day you'll realise that the majority of the UK can't sustain advertised speeds on high speed connections.

you also have to take into account the source your downloading/streaming from.

I personally would not want to rely on streaming videos especially hd stuff. Id much rather have it on a disc or on hard drive.

However id much rather have a cable connection than adsl.

i had problems with that however i havent had my connection capped in quite a while now....

used to have it everytime i got back from work even tho i hadent been around the whole day and my pc had not been on so i couldnt have gone over the limit.

Seems theyve relaxed it somewhat atleast i hope they have....

They have cable around brum where my brother lives,i'd definately prefer that, and it's cheaper too i think. Also, you're talking south brum here, they're too busy kevving up their cars to own a PC, other than to download wicked toonz, so bandwidth-wise it would be nice.

Was saving for a deposit to move up there around summer, but i've just decided on a new PC instead, i think i made the right choice, i mean, whats the point of having a new house with a shit pc in it...i ask you!

I am on cable so get the full speed... But if it has such bad contention issues, why every time I run speedtest.net I get downloads of over 3.5mb/s - for a 4mb/s line not bad huh.... I have never had performance issues...

From the experience I have the 10mb/s service will handle a piddly 5mb/s service with ease...

As to server side contention, that's what multicasting is for..
