Okay, I got my CPU (Athlon x2 5200+) and it works fine, I just had to take a GB of RAM out and it works leaving me with the idea that my PSU wasn't powerful enough, so I ordered a 700W SLI PSU and it arrived today.

So, I fitted it in and everything and booted up with just the 2GB sticks in and it ran fine, turned PC off and added the other GB stick and it won't boot. It posts and everything but just hangs after the POST at a black screen with a flashing white cursor.

All I can think of now is I need a new motherboard or something?

how many sticks of ram do you have?

Make sure you have the RAM in the right slots. As the dual channel thing can be very finicky about it.

Sounds like he has three sticks of ram, which means two in dual channel mode and one without, maybe the computer goes fubar because of that

I have 4 sticks.

E.g. RAM slots are A1 B1 A2 B2

Two identical sticks are in A1 and A2 and another two identical sticks in B1 and B2 which is how the motherboard manual says to set it out.

It worked fine with this setup when using a 3800 processor, but just doesn't like it with the 5200+ and the 5200+ is fine because I'm using it now with just 2GB RAM.

I've also tried booting up with each stick seperatley and it works fine. It just doesn't seem to like 3GB RAM with this processor.

so do you have two 1 gig sticks and two 500meg sticks?

if so, are the 1gig sticks in the first two dual slots?

exactly ur not operating in dual channel mode then. Channel a is just 1 channel.

To use dual channel you have to be using both channels so a1 then b1 and then a2 and b2.

But I don't think that could be the cause though :P

I remember my own motherboard is colour marked for exactly the same purpose Dantes is saying above.

Single channel worked with my 3800 processor, so the 5200 doesn't like single channel? (which is what I'm using now)

I dont think so Vasili, seems to be that every new CPU is shipping with dual sticks intended for dual channel mode

I'll have a fiddle around with it tomorrow then, cba messing around more with it tonight.

isnt the 5200 an am2 socket processor ?

and the 3800 a 939 socket ?

I had the Athlon x2 3800+, which was AM2.
