To the other two people on here that bought a PS3, have you tried the media centre stuff that was in the last update? I've just given it a go and I'm impressed, it works very well.

I simply shared my library in WMP11, switched my PS3 on, which automatically detected my PC, WMP automatically detected my PS3, accepted the connection and that was it, job done. I have now have access to all my pictures, videos (codec allowing), and music files, playing on my telly and through my surround sound system.

If you've not tried it yet, and are able, give it a go...takes about 30 seconds to set up.

P.S. Anyone who posts a lolsony or similar message smells of wee :P

It is a great little piece of utility though, watching downloaded TV shows is so much nicer on a big TV and surround sound.

Have they finally sorted that out on the 360 then? Because it used to be a complete pain in the ass to get running.

It involved making sure you had the right model 360, as some flavours didn't do it. Then getting hold of a copy of Windows Media Centre, as it didn't work with XP or any or version of Windows. Then spending ages arsing about with your router and network settings to get the two to talk to each other.

On another note, both Microsoft and Sony, seriously need to release a Divx/Xvid codec.

Problem with this update is for streaming video, the support is shit. You either have to convert em into a format the PS3 recognises on your PC or use Nero to transcode on the fly. And it dont like HD material in .mkv.

In related news PS3 video 9 can now convert HD mkv's into PS3 friendly mp4's faster, cos it only converts the audio and doesn't try and re-encode the video if its already compatible (as in it direct streams the video).

Yeah the H.264 support isn't that good on the PS3, and neither does it support multi channel 5.1 audio in AAC format, so therefore you probably have to downsample the audio as tempuskai said.

Yup thats correct, and one of the main reasons I don't bother putting more HD stuff on my PS3, however I have heard that the PS3 itself will downsample 5.1 into 2 channel, so even if you had a 5.1 AAC audio file it would only play in stereo.

The audio I was talking about however is stuff like AC3/DTS, which some HD stuff comes with.

Install Linux on your PS3 and fiddle about with YUM & VLC. Might be a bit buggy still though.
