Skiing this year

I am thinking of skiing this year, so what you may say, but with the kids and all it's been 7 years since I have been (too long)...

Anyway, just mulling it over, anyone have any recommendations over location, is the extra £250 or so worth (ish) for North America. Heck, anyone want to come with me seeing as my Wife detests the cold so much she has vowed to never come skiing with me ever again.

Any of you any good on the snow, there was a time I knew no fear and would chuck myself down just about anything with the skis or blades attached to me (never go the knack of boards).. I guess 7 years lack of experience and an extra stone or two on the waist may slow me a little now. However I am desperate for the kick you get with the powder again, like a drug.

I'm a qualified ski instructor in Canada and New Zealand. Obviously New Zealand wouldn't be a good option for you, since it would be their summer.

Canada, however, I can recommend whole heartedly. Depending on the amount of time you're staying, I would also recommend Sunshine Village. It has about 100km of ski runs and a ski/board park. They have a hotel right on the piste; nothing beats being able to ski in and out of where you're staying, rather than packing up skis and driving after a knackering day on the slopes. The prices are very reasonable, and you can hire a pair of skis for under £200 for a week, much less for kids. Their teaching staff is exemplary, though I do say so myself. You can even specifically ask me to teach, if that's your gig.

Sunshine is in Banff National Park, near a town of the same name. There are another two ski resorts near by - Lake Louise and Kicking Horse. Lake Louise is worth going to even if you don't ski; the scenery is beautiful.

Outside North America, I can recommend the Flims/Laax/Obertauen area in Switzerland. Though it is harder to get to - you'd have to rent a car - it is a very up-to-date and varied ski resort trio.

Val'Thorens is always a good shout, i think its the highest resort in France so you will have decent snow form the start of the season and from there you have access to the Three Valles so there is plenty of piste to ski and there is also alot of off piste if you fancy getting a guide.

This year im going to Italy (clost to Mont Blanc) for new years and to tignes in early december. Not been to either before so not really sure what to except.

Italy is very nice skiing, surprisingly. The snow isn't as good as most of Europe - since it is most southerly it tends to be wetter and stickier, but on the whole it's not too bad. I would recommend France, Austria or Switzerland above it, though.
