A source close to BioWare confirmed to us today that the studio’s upcoming untitled massively-multiplayer online RPG will be centered around the Star Wars universe, specifically that of Knights of the Old Republic, which the developer released in 2003. The game garnered critical acclaim and spawned a less-popular sequel, released by Obsidian two years later.

The game is being developed by the company’s Austin studio, formed in 2006 and headed by BioWare Creative Director James Ohlen, whose past credits include the first KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights, and Baldur Gate’s I and II.

This is not the first Star Wars-related MMORPG: Star Wars Galaxies debuted in the summer of 2003, followed by several expansions. It was generally well-received by fans and critics, but subscriber numbers plunged and never recovered after a controversial gameplay update in 2005. It’s estimated that the game now has fewer than 100,000 subscribers and less than 20,000 active players.

It’s currently unknown whether or not EA, which acquired BioWare last week, will act as publisher for this title, or if the studio had a previous arrangement with another publisher.

Expect the game sometime in 2009.

Wether it's true or not I think it would be awsome and I'd play for sure. Bioware did a great job with KotoR and I always thought that it would be a perfect setting for a StarWars game....so I reamin hopeful.

I dont actually think the rumour is true to be honest, mostly for Lucasarts licensing reasons.

However, assuming it is, and without wanting to piss on everyones chips here , but a few points.

Firstly Bioware Austin isn't Bioware.

It's an amalgam of MMORPG developers.

They're lucky to even have the name Bioware attached to it

The lead combat designer, for instance.

Also KOTOR MMO isn't the KOTOR single player game. There will be no plot twists, because there will be no plot.

And most of all.

Its owned, lock stock and barrel by EA.

EA and MMO simply dont go together.

Ask anyone who played UO.

Or that space sim thing they tried.

What I find most amusing is people are asuming that because they hide behind the 'bioware' brand name , it somehow ensures a kotor standard game.

Several of the lead designers come from SWG in fact.

Its just marketing, bioware austin is just A.N. Other MMO design team made up of the same tired old names from the same tired old games weve already played,non of whom worked on kotor of jade empire , or the latest thing, gears of war or whatever its called. An entirely different office in an entirely different location, funding by Bioware.

Well, now the money is coming from EA obviously , not Bioware.

Which probably means it will be shit.

or Wii exclusive.

Out of all the shite this is about the only MMO worth being even vaguely optimistic about.
