well for that resolution I would suggest atleast 2000kbit/sec video bitrate.

Depending if the movie has very fast or slow moving content, you could then adjust the bitrate accordingly.

cut a piece of the movie , lets say in the middle of 10secs and encode it in h.264 with starting bitrate of 2000.

If satisfactory, then try to decrease it for a smaller file, or increase it if it looks shite.

Encode 10% of the overall movie length, preferably from the middle of the movie so you're encoding all action with no intros of less detail.

That way you can check the quality and get a decent estimate of finished file size.
