Well either of those machines you have quoted will do that job for you - but on those gfx cards dont expect to push the boat out on the new stuff like CoD4/Crysis etc - it wont cut it.

For £600 you can put together a 3Ghz duo, 4Gb RAM and an 8800GT if you already have a case to toss it into.

This is true, but he said he doesnt want to build one - which sucks because you could easily do it for £700 quid.

Been checking that shite out myself recently, I feel an incoming upgrade.

Is it just me or outside of media encoding are quad cores supersonically useless?

They are. And thats the reason I went with a C2D - its just better value for money, and theres hardly any difference in performance.

Indeed. That's why I decided not to upgrade my CPU.

I just bought a cheap £30 celeron D chip to stick with all my old parts and made a spare PC!

The £500 12Meg cache quad core looks awesome for e-peen swinging though.

The Q6600 is a steal.

Performance aswell as any C2D, will only perform better when more multi-thread games come through and it's only £20 more than a E6600.

It's what i'd get anyway.
