So I work in IT - and failing miracles tonight I will probably have to for some good time to come. Accepting this - I need to be planning ahead in skills so I can bring home the bacon in years to come.
I have decided to try and be a little proactive about this and model my skill set to something future proof, my current idea is to use the experience I have of Oracle / SQL DBA and supplement with a little study into SQL / T-SQL and hey presto I am a business intelligence / reporting specialist yadda yadda.. Where as I expect the mundane 'support' roles in future years will probably be more automated or outsourced to 3rd world, someone who can face to face with the business and then get them the info they are looking for will probably have a slightly better future... That’s the hope anyway! You never know - get friendly with enough city management types and you may be one of them one day.
So I was wondering, anyone in IT got a plan I can pinch that will make me oodles of cash - something future proof. I am stuck with a life sentence with IT I expect - may as well try and make the most of it..
